LecturerToday I'll explain why forests are so vital, and why losing them harms us all, not just the wildlife.
LecturerThe first job of a forest is cleaning the air. Trees take in the gas carbon dioxide and give out oxygen.
LecturerSecond, forests guard the soil. Without tree roots holding it, heavy rain simply washes the earth away.
LecturerThird, they store water. A healthy forest acts like a giant sponge, releasing water slowly into rivers.
LecturerForests are also home to most land animals; in fact, they shelter over half of all known species.
LecturerThey help cool the planet too, which is why people call the rainforest the lungs of the Earth.
