LecturerGood morning. Today I want to explore the legal framework and psychological barriers surrounding whistleblowing in the modern workplace.
LecturerIn the UK, the Public Interest Disclosure Act of nineteen ninety-eight gives legal protection to employees who report wrongdoing in good faith.
LecturerDespite this, research shows that only twenty-six per cent of employees who witness misconduct report it through official channels.
LecturerThe primary reason is fear. Surveys consistently show that seventy-one per cent of non-reporters cite concern about being sidelined or dismissed as their main barrier.
LecturerThe second barrier is uncertainty. Many employees are not sure whether what they have witnessed constitutes reportable wrongdoing — they fear making a false accusation.
LecturerAnonymous hotlines have been shown to increase reporting rates by up to thirty-eight per cent. However, truly anonymous systems require robust technical safeguards.
