LecturerToday I'll show that place names are tiny histories, if you know how to read them.
LecturerMany names describe the land itself. A town ending in 'ford' once marked a shallow river crossing.
LecturerOthers record who lived there. The ending 'ton' usually meant a small farm or settlement.
LecturerTrees leave traces too. A place with 'oak' in its name often stood beside an ancient wood.
LecturerSome names remember work. A 'Saltway' was a road along which people once carried salt.
LecturerInvaders left their mark. Names ending in 'by' were usually founded by Viking settlers.
