GuideWelcome to the history trail. I'll lead you to five stops, each marked by a small brass plaque in the pavement.
GuideStop one is the wide square by the church. This is where the first market was held, back in medieval times.
GuideStop two is a narrow cottage on Bell Street. Its claim to fame is that a famous writer was born there.
GuideStop three is the gap between two banks. Few people realise this is where the old gate once stood, guarding the road in.
GuideStop four lies down by the river, on a slipway, and that is where ships were built by hand for two centuries.
GuideStop five is a stone circle in the gardens, and remarkably this is where the town well still survives beneath an iron lid.
