GuideWelcome to the Materials Laboratory. I'll take you past five working rooms; please stay behind the yellow line in each.
GuideOur first stop is the Press Room. Here, huge machines test how much weight a material holds before it gives way.
GuideNext is the Cold Room. Wrap up — inside, we freeze materials to extreme cold to see how they behave.
GuideThe Imaging Room is quieter. With powerful microscopes, researchers look at surfaces under a microscope, down to single atoms.
GuideThen the Pull Room, which students find dramatic: machines stretch materials until they snap, and it can be loud.
GuideLast, the Print Room. This is where our 3D printers print objects layer by layer from metal or plastic powder.
