LecturerToday I'll trace how the computer grew from a room-sized monster into the device in your pocket.
LecturerThe story really starts with an idea, long before any machine: that a single device could follow any set of written instructions.
LecturerThe earliest electronic computers, built in the nineteen forties, were enormous and filled a whole room.
LecturerThey were also unreliable, because they relied on thousands of fragile glass tubes that kept burning out.
LecturerEverything changed with one tiny invention: the transistor, which did the same job but was small and tough.
LecturerSoon, thousands of these were packed onto a single sliver of silicon, which we call a chip.
