LecturerToday we explore how an understanding of genes has quietly transformed the food on our plates.
LecturerFor thousands of years, farmers improved crops by simply keeping seeds from their best plants, a slow method called selective breeding.
LecturerThe aim was always the same: to pass on useful features, such as a bigger fruit or a stronger stem.
LecturerThe trouble with this old way is that it is extremely slow — a real change can take many generations.
LecturerModern science offers a shortcut. By reading a plant's genes, scientists can pick the best young plants without waiting for them to grow.
LecturerMore controversially, they can also move a single gene from one species into another, creating what we call a GM crop.
