LecturerToday's lecture is a gentle introduction to genetics — the study of how living things pass on their features to their children.
LecturerEverything starts with a long molecule called DNA. Think of it as a recipe book that every cell in your body carries.
LecturerA single instruction inside that book is called a gene, and each gene controls one small feature, such as eye colour.
LecturerYour DNA is packed into structures called chromosomes. Humans normally have twenty-three pairs of them in each cell.
LecturerYou receive half of your genes from each parent, which is why a child resembles both the mother and the father.
LecturerSometimes a gene is copied with a small error. We call this change a mutation, and most are harmless.
