LecturerToday I'll follow one ordinary town across a hundred years, using its old photographs and records.
LecturerA century ago, the town lived mainly by farming, with most families working the surrounding land.
LecturerThe biggest early change was the railway, which suddenly linked the town to distant cities.
LecturerWith the railway came a factory, making boots, which drew workers in from the villages.
LecturerThe population then doubled in just thirty years, and new streets spread up the hillside.
LecturerHard times followed when the factory closed, and many shops on the high street stood empty.
